Until last weekend I've had intermittent starting problems for a couple of years now, but never a game breaker. I think I have narrowed down the problem to one of the relays in the safety circuits. When I turn the key, electrical system comes up (dash, lights, etc), but no action from the starter. Jumping from ground to hot solenoid results in sparks at ground point but no start. Before I get into an archilogical dig, are the solinoids under the dash panel? Haven't been able to find them, but with the loader bucket down, there's not a heck of a lot of room to look.
Any help is greatly appriciated.
Thanks

Don't know the NH line so just talking generally. When we talk of a solenoid in starting, that's the gismo right on the starter that activates it. Assuming there's a decompression control, do you use it?
If shorting the starter doesn't move anything maybe the engine's frozen or more likely the starter's bad. Could be its solenoid or something else. Before getting the starter to an auto-electric or tractor shop, make sure it's the correct terminals you're shorting. ....

Before I tore into it I'd have a go at the more obvious, and convenient, potential culprits.
Your comment about it being an intermittent problem for several years makes me think it's a safety switch that's at the root of the problem.
Try moving all of the items that might have safety switches, PTO, gear selector, brakes, etc., etc. first.
If you can, hold the key in the start position with one hand, and move and jiggle each control to see if it will engage the starter.
It's been my experience that the PTO lever is the most likely culprit.
Best of luck. ....

Most likely it's the switch ($80). The either wear out or melt. I've replaced mine 4 times. I ended up replacing it with a generic switch and adding a secondary switch for the glow plugs. The relay bank and all other electrical stuff is behind the left side cover where your knee would be. I'v learned to live with the gremlins. ....

But shorting the starter would bypass a bad key or safety switch. ....

This is an amazing site. several good suggestions in a matter of hours. Thanks guys :)
I have replaced the switch $80, ouch...but at least got a couple of more spare keys
I'm quite certain the motors not frozen up...ran good a couple of days before, recent fluid changes etc.
Thanks for the information on the relay location. I'll open up tomorrow and see what I can find. ....
